The afterbirth in skincare

Placenta extract in skin care products is being promoted as one of the new hypes of the decade it seems. In truth, placenta extract in skincare products was first introduced some 50 years ago.

I suppose back then many consumers felt fairly uncomfortable with the idea of applying "essence of sheep or bovine afterbirth" on their faces whereas nowadays people are willing to try almost everything to look and to a certain extent also feel better.

For those who are not familair with the term "placenta", I will explain;
The placenta is the lining of the womb that is expelled after birth and in effect, as I did earlier the placenta is often referred to as the "afterbirth".

The placenta is extremely rich in nutrients which of course provides nourishment for the foetus during pregnancy. It is for this particular reason one believes that the placenta or moreover the stored nutrients within may very well be beneficial in restoring the youthful glow of days gone by.

Typically speaking, all anti aging products promise you the key to the fountain of youth but very rarely do they make good on their promises. However, placenta extract may actually do the trick, as it is now widely used in other cosmetic and personal products as well, such as shampoos and hairbalms etc.

Placenta extract can also be injected into the bloodstream or taken orally which according to experts would yield better results.

There are many manufactures out there today producing placenta serum. Sheeps placenta will be mainly produced in New Zealand and Australia wheras bovine placenta is more common in the States and Europe.

It doesn't look like placenta extract is going to go out of fashion just yet, a number of celebrities still endorse or rather are endorsed by brands producing placenta serum mainly Jennifer Lopez and Pamela Andersson.
